Cal Poly Pomona Student Recreation Center
(# 595)
Category:
Images Description Credits
The 120,000 SF Recreation Center was the last piece to campus life and is adjacent to academics, athletics and student housing. The program includes a three-court gym, a multi-activity-court, rock climbing wall, fitness areas, multi-purpose rooms, racquetball courts and a running track.

The large program on an awkward shaped site gave form to the building. The design team maximized the footprint and cantilevered the third floor clearing site easements while meeting program requirements. The Center makes a direct connection to the campus quad with a façade primarily composed of protected glazing. The building entry opens at the intersection of the major pedestrian paths with a naturally ventilated lobby where a 50’ high climbing wall marks the terminus of the pedestrian walkways.

The project is tracking LEED NC Gold certification and beats Title-24 by 31.3%. Sustainable strategies included displacement ventilation, natural daylighting, natural ventilation and solar control.
