Rio del Sol K-8 STEAM School
(# 795)
Category:
Images Description Credits
This new 900-student K-8 campus in Oxnard, California provides an unprecedented educational experience for a largely migrant population. The design approach embraces the site’s unique location, adjacent to the Santa Clara River on ancient Chumash lands.

Both the program and architecture respond to the District Superindent’s question: "How can we help the river find its way for the next 100 years?" The “River of Knowledge” is a meandering path that connects all buildings, fostering transdisciplinary learning and cross-grade-level interaction. Through student-centered, inquiry- and project-based environments, writeable and magnetic surfaces, as well as integrated 'fidget-to-focus' agile furniture and AV equipment, the learning environment is designed to evolve alongside the curriculum. The design also utilizes the principles of Chumash Cosmology and incorporates a number of culture- and creativity-inspiring features.
