The project is a remodel of a 1970s modern single family residence with a 1,700 square foot addition for a multi-generational family. The family wanted to add a two story addition, but rather than working against the lines and massing of the existing building, or juxtaposing old and new, the design seeks to create one unified aesthetic. A wood screen is used to obscure the line between the original home and the addition, as well as create a balustrade for a large roof deck with views of the Arroyo. Combined with smooth white stucco, a composition of light and dark ties former and newly built elements together. Additionally, a pair of smaller additions to the kitchen and living room help clean up the massing of the building into more continuous lines. The result is a balanced design in which the massing of a two story volume works seamlessly with the existing low lines of the house, and in which primary living spaces are opened up for a better inside-to-outside connection.
