Palo Verde College
(# 848)
Images Description Credits
A small college, an “oasis for learning” in the Mojave Desert, California’s hottest, remotest, least populated region. Mandated in 1992 to replace its 6 acre downtown site, the college was rebuilt on a 200 acre mesa site overlooking the Colorado River Valley. It utilizes a variety of strategies to accommodate the climate, while creating a wondrous interior-oriented campus.   Included are all elements of a community college campus, ranging from academics to career/technical education, the arts and physical education, along with all utility and support infrastructure.  Specific strategies include: Mall Code, Daylighting, Photovoltaic Array, Thermal Mass, Desert-friendly local materials, Native American-inspired, Air lock entries, Gateway pedestrian bridge with trellises for shade. The project’s greatest accomplishment is already achieving the AIA’s goal of “NET ZERO Carbon Emissions by 2050”
