The Living Room Hospice/Hospital
(# 815)
Images Description Credits
The Living Room Hospital is a first-of-its-kind hospice campus in Eldoret, Kenya, a sustainable development facilitating palliative and spiritual care.
The American architect developed the initial parti, program, site design, master plan, massing models and renderings for fundraising and site control; then collaborated in an intensive on-site design charrette with Kenyan professionals to adapt the concept to the steeply wooded site.
Phase 1 includes an inpatient hospice for all ages; an outpatient physical therapy/counseling clinic; laboratory, pharmacy, kitchen, chapel, administrative and support infrastructure, arranged in a crescent around lush garden terraces.
Onsite timber was harvested for the wood-beam chapel at the heart of the site. All buildings have natural daylighting and extensive cross-ventilation for fresh air in this mild climate. The building parti reflects the local building technique of utilizing masonry walls tied with concrete eaves to provide a muscular aesthetic.
