Penn Court is an alternative approach to housing design making density palatable to a community through the sensitive interpretation of the local character, vision, and spirit of a place. The project consists of 28 townhomes on an excess 1.63 acre parcel of land from the construction of the 210 freeway. The land was traded to the developer by the city, to place 33 acres of nearby native hillside into permanent open space. Ten buildings of triplexes and duplexes form courtyards and gardens providing a higher density of housing that responds to the community’s vision and desire for a rural suburban aesthetic. The design uses wood siding, columns, and beams to create contemporary facades that connect to the spirit of past structures without the need for traditional, nostalgic, imitation of a former era.
